Two Spoons Bistro and Bar is a relatively new restaurant located in the heart of Ajijic on Ocampo #2. Tel. (376) 766-5089.

Their specialty is French Onion Soup which by all accounts is delicious and authentic.

Also to start there is a Chipotle Raspberry Sauce over Cream Cheese on Multi Grain Crackers and a daily soup.

They have three fresh tasty salads as well.

The entrees include several Savory Chicken dishes, Mahi, Mahi beautifully prepared with black olive and capers, baby sautéed potatoes and green beans, Coconut Curry Shrimp on Basmati Rice and an aromatic and flavorful pork dish.

Two Spoons has one dessert at the moment which a frozen Key Lime affair not a tart or a pie but jolly good nonetheless.

The atmosphere is casual and friendly and the service is attentive. The wine list is very good and there are several good wines by the glass.

There is a restaurant that everyone has been talking about for breakfast and lunch and recently they opened for dinner.

This is very good news and jolly good timing as we have lost one of our best chefs, Laurent, to South America.

My friend (who had enjoyed an amazing brunch at La Una) and I decided to try it for dinner and we were not disappointed.

For dinner the appetizers include: Marinated Olives, Pan Lomo which is oven baked pork loin covered in brie, a delicious House Salad, Garlic Baked in the Oven, Vegetable Terrine, a Two Pate Plate, Grilled Baby Octopus, Carpaccio and a Three Cheese Plate.

The Entrees include: Cornish Game Hen, Fresh Fish Filet of the day which is a specialty of the house, Gambas as Ajillo which are giant shrimp in butter, garlic and chili, Seared Pepper-Crusted Ahi Tuna Steak, Tenderloin “La Una” in a creamy wine and mushroom sauce, Filet Mignon, Duck Breast a la Frambuesa and Lamb Chops.

At the moment they offer two desserts apple pie and flan.

They have some excellent wines which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had a Casa Madero (the oldest vineyard in Mexico) Chardonnay and I had a wonderful Muscatel y Palomino dessert wine (to my taste reminiscent of Chateau D’Yquem) with an excellent cup of coffee.

Prices for such gourmet food are very reasonable at $130.00 – $220.00 pesos.

Breakfast at La Una includes Yogurt, Fruit Plate, Muffins, Waffles, House Special, Eggs, Croissant, Chilaquiles, Eggs Benedict and Steak and Eggs with prices ranging from $40.00 – $120.00 pesos.

They also sell an excellent raspberry jam to go.

Lunch is Soup del Dia, Croissants with a variety of fresh and delicious fillings to choose from, Salads, Filet Mignon prepared in a variety of ways, a Rib Eye and T-Bone steak. There is an al a carte menu as well and an assortment of non-alcoholic drinks and some lovely wines such as Vino Blanco Montevina de Casa Madero and Vino Tinto Montevina de Casa Madero and Vino Espumoso Chambrule L.A. by the popular vineyard L.A. Cetto. These wines are $50.00 pesos per glass or $195.00 pesos per bottle.

La Una is located across from San Andres Church in downtown Ajijic on Marcos Castellanos #9 and you can reach the owners, Douglas and Susanna at 331 145 5551 or for reservations (376) 2072.

If you like great food and wine call today!

Buen Provecho!

This new meat store is being described as a Fine Cuts Boutique. They are located beside Joanna’s German Restaurant on Boulevard Ajijic # 122 in La Floresta. Their phone # is (376) 766-5288 and they are also on Facebook under Sonora’s Meat Ajijic.

We have been buying our meat from Tony’s (beside Superlake) for the almost 18 years we have been here in Ajijic, Lake Chapala. We have always been very happy with meat from Tony’s and have frequently made special orders for special occasions.

When Walmart opened at first we did not think of buying any meat from them but after hearing many comments about how good the selection and prices were we gave it a try. I love the meat from Walmart, particularly the whole chickens and chicken cuts, the pork and the Angus beef. They also have a large selection of fish and seafood as well as a custom butcher so it is one stop shopping if you will.

We still buy from Tony’s as I only go to Walmart maybe twice a month.

Then we heard about SM Sonora’s Meat and I decided to try it as I wanted a nice prime rib roast for Easter dinner.

I went there and was served by the owner, two butchers and the checkout girl who speaks English.

They were very friendly and the shop was very clean. Outside on the terrace they have a very large pristine grill and they will grill your meat for you for free if you so desire.

SM Sonora’s Meat had every conceivable cut of beef, pork and lamb. It was truly like being in a meat candy store.

The prices were less than I thought they would be and I got a beautiful prime rib roast and two custom cut New York steaks.

I also called them today to order a shoulder of pork with bone in which is something I have not been able to get anywhere else. They are calling me as soon as they have it in.

I think I will definitely use SM Sonora’s Meat for special occasions.

It is very nice to have this new other meat option right here in our beautiful village in the sun.

Buen Provecho!

Evidently there is a long standing relationship between the Irish and the Mexicans and this following recipe honors that relationship either for Saint Patrick’s Day or any other day of the year.

Mexican Shepherd’s Pie

Serves 4-6
1 tbsp. olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 serrano chile, minced (optional)
500 grams Mexican chorizo raw
1 ½ cups plum tomatoes, diced,
500 grams potatoes, peeled, boiled, drained
2 tbsps. butter
½ cup whole milk
1 ½ cups grated soft manchego cheese
¼ cup sweet corn kernels

Saute the onions in the olive oil for a few minutes over medium-high heat. Add the serrano and the chorizo and fry for about 15 minutes until fully cooked breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon. Add the tomatoes, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Pour the meat mixture into a greased 2 quart baking dish. Mash the potatoes with the butter and the milk then stir in the manchego and corn, spoon and smooth the potato mixture over the meat then bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Serve with the following gravy.

Green Onion and Chipotle Gravy

2 tbsps. butter
1 ½ cups green onions, chopped
2 tbsps. flour
1 ½ cups beef broth
1 chopped chipotle in adobe sauce

Saute the green onions in butter over medium heat for a few minutes. Add the flour and cook for another minute. Slowly add the beef broth and whisk until the gravy thickens about 5 minutes. Stir in the chipotle, remove from heat and serve separately.

Buen provecho!

Last night at Number FOUR Restaurant the owner, Kim Everest, put on a fabulous event giving people a last chance to party with the band “The Tallboys” paired with free Real Gusto Reprosado (amber) and Silverado (white) free tequila.

As if that was not enough the Number Four Chefs Greg and Glenroy prepared a delicious special menu for the occasion available along with the regular menu.

Throughout the evening people were served samples of Real Gusto’s new tequilas they are promoting across Mexico by very nice representatives.

The food as usual was amazing and I particularly can recommend the Steak Frites, the Seafood Green Curry and the Roasted Tomato Soup with reduced basil oil. We were a group of 10 and everyone ordered something different and everyone was happy.

There was dancing and table were removed to make more room for those wishing to dance to the toe-tapping music of The Tall Boys.

The reason I am writing about last evening, aside from the fact that it was another one of Kim’s exciting events, is that the restaurant both upstairs and downstairs where filled to the rafters with very happy people having a wonderful time.

To me this is, yet, another sign that things are, in fact, getting better in our beautiful village in the sun – Ajijic.

Often restaurants and stores are not experiencing the custom they would like but last night certainly put paid to that.

Also Le Nueva Posada at # 9 Donato Guerra (376) 766-1444 in Ajijic has been enjoying a full hotel and increased numbers in the dining room and garden. La Nueva Posada is open 7 days a week.

Number Four is located at #4 Donato Guerra (376)766-1360. They are open Thursday and Friday from 6:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 pm. You can also visit their website at: www.restaurantnumberfour.com

Buen Provecho!

Unfortunately, we have lost our wonderful French chef, Laurent. Laurent has moved to Argentina to a five star restaurant as the head chef and we are, of course, very pleased for him and his family but very sad for ourselves.

The good news is that Café Adelita is up and running after renovations and is flourishing. Café Adelita is perhaps more casual dining but the food is very good and meticulously prepared by Chef Shea.

The other attraction of Café Adelita is the live music Thursday through Sunday.

Bryan James plays Thursday, The Regrets with Jason Taylor play Friday, the Lucky Dogs play Saturday and the Blue Jay Slims play Sunday. All groups are great for dancing so put on your dancing shoes because you will want to dance.

For more information about the different groups and the extensive menu you can visit their web site at: www.cafeadelita.com

Reservations are advised and you can make them by calling (376) 766-0097 or on their website. They also have a Facebook page with daily updates.

Tuesday the excellent ribs are half price with home-cut fries and cole slaw.

Wednesday is Seafood with lobster, crab cakes and other delicacies.

Thursday 2 x 1 margaritas are offered.

Friday Chef Shea presents his succulent menu choices.

Sunday is Blues BBQ day.

The hours for Café Adelita are Tuesday – Saturday 5:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Sunday 12 noon – 9:00 pm
Mondays they are closed.

You will appreciate the atmosphere of good food and good times and the wonderfully friendly and efficient staff. There is also a pool table for your enjoyment.

Café Adelita is located in San Antonio Tlayacapan beside the church. You take the street going down towards the lake beside Mail Boxes Etc. and turn right at the church then turn left at the first street and you are there.

San Antonio Tlayacapan is just east of Ajijic, Lake Chapala.

We had 13 family members here in Ajijic, Lake Chapala from the US and Canada for our son’s wedding earlier this month.

No one had asked “Is it safe or will we be OK?”. Everyone happily hopped on a plane and came to support the family. Granted it is not terrific weather in Toronto at this time of year but nonetheless…

Unfortunately, our widely touted perfect weather did not co-operate and it rained every day for 15 days or more days and we seldom saw the sun. It also teamed cats and dogs on the day of the wedding but we moved inside and took comfort in the old wives tale that rain on your wedding day is good luck.

The weather did not prevent us from going everywhere in the day time and at night.

We frequented many restaurants both upscale and not so much and even some of the troops went to the Carnivale in Chapala at night. Fijate! (Imagine that!)

Long walks in Ajijic and on the Malecon were taken and all forms of markets visited and purchases made.

Night clubs were visited until the wee hours and admittedly some alcohol was consumed.

ATMs visited in all locations and I am very happy to report that there was not one incident of any note that threatened anyone’s safety.

We did, however, suggest to our visiting guests, that they might not wish to get involved in dealing drugs while they were visiting the lakeside area.

They took our advice to a man and all was well. I also mentioned that one has to keep one’s eyes open and wits about them wherever there are people and this advice was followed.

Having been born and bred in the big city of Toronto, Canada, I am no stranger to the dangers of a big city. I still feel very safe and happy here in Ajijic, Lake Chapala and so did our visiting friends and family.

Come on down. The weather, once again, is fine!

I had been hearing about this “taco stand” for some time from various sources but admit that I dismissed it out of hand.

When someone tells me about a taco stand next to the Pemex on the libramiento it was not somewhere I had to try.

As some of you know one of our daughters is an amazing cook and when she told me about Lake Taco and how good it was I did have ears for her.

We have had family members here for the last 15 days and finding a good breakfast and lunch place was very exciting.

A group of us decided to try it and were we happy we did.

It is run by a Mexican, Fernando, who was trained in California and the tacos and burritos are the best we have ever eaten.

Fernando also has an extensive selection of fresh homemade salsas as well as bottled hot sauces in all degrees of hotness.

The coffee is wonderful and there is a wide selection of cold drinks and beer.

But it is the tacos and burritos which are clearly the stars of this restaurant open for breakfast and lunch.

There are mahi mahi fish tacos fried or grilled, shrimp tacos, arrechera tacos to name a few and burritos as well which can also be fried. There are breakfast tacos and burritos of bacon or ham and egg. My favorite, so far is the fried mahi mahi taco but I am working my way happily through the entire menu.

The tacos are topped with lovely fresh shredded cabbage and their special sauce and are truly delicious.

Over the two weeks we took friends and family member there several times and everyone was always thrilled with their food and could not wait to go back and taste another choice.

The service is very good but not fast as every taco and burrito is made to order but it is well worth the wait. Lake Taco has a lovely view of the lake and is very clean and welcoming.

I suggest you do not wait another moment to try these fabulous tacos and burritos.

Buen provecho!

We attended a wedding at La Nueva Posada this past week-end. Everything was absolutely perfect. We had planned on having the wedding in the garden with the guests facing the lake and enjoying a beautiful Mexican sunset with a lovely dinner under the stars.

The weather had different plans for us and it rained up to and during Saturday so everything was moved inside. Michael Eager Jr. transformed the dining room into a spectacular vision of candles and white lights. The tables were adorned with calla lilies and the wedding cake created by Marta Camacho de Eager was the amazing center piece and was lit by beautiful brass candlesticks.

The food was delicious and we were served a wonderful salad with brie cheese and baby spinach with chipotle dressing and a choice of salmon glazed with Gran Marnier or Arrechera.

We, naturally, had margaritas lots and lovely wine and champagne to toast the happy couple.

The service was wonderful and friendly as always and the music was perfect.

The wedding party looked stunning and the bride, maid of honor and bridesmaids dresses were all made in Thailand. The best man travelled from Toronto to be at the groom’s side and the groomsmen all looked very smart. The groom was also in a suit fashioned in Thailand. I probably am a little prejudiced but the bride and groom looked amazing.

We could not have asked for anything to have gone better. The Eagers outdid themselves in making our guests feel welcome and extremely well looked after. We were very proud the entire Eager family joined us for the festivities and are very grateful to them for the magnificent job they did.

We wish the happy couple all the best and a very long and happy life.
