Recently, I a happy to report, the Ministers of Travel in the US and Canada both have said that it is indeed safe to travel to Mexico.
I have been coming to Mexico for nine years before we moved here in l994. Largely we traveled to the coastal cities of Cancun, Acapulco, Puerta Vallerta and Ixtapa. We never had an incident of any kind causing concern. Other than, perhaps, too much sun bathing.
Although it is true there is some unrest in some border towns between the US and Mexico you might be interested in knowing 99% of the guns used on the Mexican side are imported by the thousands from the United States of America by Americans. Perhaps if these people stopped shipping guns for profit things might well settle down.
Our President Filipe Calderone is asking President Barack Obama for help to, if not resolve then certainly, slow the drug trafficking between our two countries. Obama has responded positively to this request and ways are now being studied as to how best deal with the situation.
If there was not such a large market in the US for these drugs the drug lords would soon be out of business.
I think that these dire warning are unfounded about Mexico being unsafe but if it makes you feel better then fly to your destination and I am sure you will have a wonderful time and return safely home with a lovely suntan and many stories about the warmth and hospitality of the Mexican people.
Ajijic has always been a safe place to travel and to live as we seem to be removed form any serious drug action. We do however, offer the many over the counter medications all retirees need, of course, at very reasonable prices.
