Once many years I was able to proudly report that our children were involved in a recycling program at their school and perhaps we would start recycling after the success of that program.

We have had a few false starts with the current trash program here I Ajijic, Lake Chapala but it would now appear that we might be moving ahead

The Chapala municipal government with take the first steps toward implementing community-wide waste separation practices as of June lst.

Door-to-door orientation will commence and, hopefully, all residents and businesses will be complying with the obligatory rule to separate rubbish by October.

There will be three colored-coded categories. Organic matter will be green. Inorganic materials will be blue and sanitary waste orange.

These waste separation practices will go hand in hand with a new garbage collection system which may, of course, vary from area to area.

The basic plan is organic wastes (green) will be picked up Mondays and Thursdays.

Inorganic materials (blue) will be picked up Tuesdays and Fridays and sanitary wastes (orange) Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The garbage trucks will be displaying colored flags to signal the type of material being collected on any give day.

The program will begin with one neighborhood at a time. A team of local promoters will go door to door to explain the plan and deliver a flyer with details of the waste materials belonging to the 3 different categories.

If you think this sounds complicated it is. However, it is high time we in Ajijic,Lake Chapala do our part for the environment. After a few months I am sure everything will be running smoothly and everyone will have a firm grasp of the new trash program. Or not.

Despite the 5 years notice provided by Jalisco state officials, many of the other municipalities were not ready for such an endeavor. As a result of the poor response to the rallying “Semades” (garbage separation department) the state of Jalisco is off to a less than stellar start.

Many of the state officials claim that the lack of funding is the real issue. They believe that in order to take on such an ambitious project they would need massive financial support which is not forthcoming.

Semades is not without hope however. “We will achieve this goal, no matter how long it takes” was quoted by a Semades worker.

The truth is recycling, no matter where you are in the world, is important and we as citizens of the Ajijic, Lake Chapala, Area need to do our part to help. Whether that means recycling items around your house or getting the word out. We all need to pitch in.
